Well done to The Daily Telegraph’s creativity department for the provocative proposition that Rodert Irwin should give the James Bond role some serious consideration. (“I’ve got licence to thrill,” 1/12). Australian George Lazenby was cast as the second Bond after a brief career in modelling. He starred in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, before making way for Roger Moore. Still alive and well at 85, perhaps his secret to longevity was to only do one of these stressful movies. Coincidentally, Steve Irwin was born in 1962, the year that the first Bond movie, Dr No, was released, so maybe there is a celestial inspiration to today’s developments. With new scripts imbued with an Australia Zoo flavour, this whole idea might be a winner for the local film industry. Man With Muscly Guns, The Fly Who Loved Me, Crockto-pussy, Never Say Never on the Never-Never, No Time to Fry: surely the prospects are bright indeed for young Mr Irwin.
