We live in a socially networked country with beneficent values, fostering legal respect for property, enterprise, capacity to exchange labour for a fair salary and an inalienable respect in the law for human and personal rights. Land use is a product of these forces interacting in our economic world. Land claims by Aboriginal councils, when crown land is unimproved and unutilised has occurred and ought not be seen as hostile. (Payback for slavery, 7/9). However, sites with major infrastructure with future potential should never be foolishly surrendered. It’s hypocritical that crown land not being used is targeted by Land Councils, who are then not required to utilise the property at all. The Parramatta Gaol with capacity to house 400 homeless should be immediately utilised for that purpose. Rather than locking up their acquired assets, the Land Councils have a social responsibility to demonstrate a community spirit of compassion and healing, since that is what is being demanded of governments by them. Doing so might project trust and a character worthy of a Yes vote for the Voice on October 14. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 8Sep2023.
