Although school shootings in the US have reflected for a long time the maladapted neuroplasticity in the teenage brain, itself sometimes incapable of balancing patient logic against a torrent of hormonal biology, no one seems able to identify what triggers these repetitive bloodbaths. News that two teenagers this week attacked a mosque in San Diego and murdered three people is outrageous. (“Three dead in shooting attack on US mosque”, DT, 20/5). Our hearts must surely break for the security guard who’s loss will be sorely felt by his wife and children. Killing people because of religious differences is anathema to every human value and demands universal condemnation. We have much more in common than what divides us. Jewish and Christian advocates should strongly denounce this attack on Islam if our principled credibility is to be sustained. Strangely, the love of Nazi insignia and racist dogma by the teenage assassins highlights their poor research and groundless motivation when the historical facts are objectively assessed. Meeting the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem in Berlin in November 1941, Haj Amin al Husseini, Adolf Hitler praised Islam claiming it was the only religion he could take seriously. More attention to detail and less impulsiveness might indeed serve as an antidote to these horrific tragedies. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 21May2026
