Recognising the complicated extraction and replacement of bone, muscle and nerves in the treatment of pharyngeal mouth cancer, it should be no surprise that Aussie singing sensation John Farnham certainly wouldn’t sound the same if he ever jumped back on stage (“Farnham won’t sing again”, DT, 29/5). News that he had in the past rejected staging a tribute show in his honour highlights a wonderful humility which would resonate with all Aussies. After all, he had already staged many farewell tours since 2002, but his appeal to younger audiences and sell out successes programmed him to keep going. While his cancer diagnosis torpedoed his career, it is wonderful news that his tribute concert will now proceed since the profits will go to cancer research. This is a great decision for those who genuinely love his music and future sufferers of oropharyngeal cancer whose treatment will benefit from injecting more funds into strategies for best practice through research.
