Publicity within the media is a multifaceted but untamed beast, adapted to well rehearsed industry standards which are proficient when conveniently exaggerating the nobodies of reality television. The media counterintuitively preserves the privacy of those most deserving of fame and our wholesome approbation. (Calls for Bondi cop to be given highest award, DT, 12/9). It was always odd that others absorbed much of the noble acclaim in the days and months after December 14th, while policeman Cesar Barraza vanished. With Premier Minns and Opposition Leader Kellie Sloan awakened to the needs to acclaim Cesar belatedly after a recent book launch, their timing might be questioned, especially as they “call for the awarding of a Cross of Valour” rather than announce it is happening after making a few imperative phone calls. With an election around the corner, it might be tempting to garner undeserved limelight by standing up for Cesar, but the iconic laurel wreath crowning Rome’s ancient winners might end up as a metaphorical rope a bit lower down if the electorate becomes understandably cynical. “Heroic courage under fire without concern for self” deserves its own superlative category in the award annals of this state.
