Your commentary on the management of COVID biosecurity deserves praise. The outstanding media surveillance of ridiculous lapses in basic procedures may be lifesaving. (Latest lapse a big worry, 24/12). Complacency simply because “nothing has gone wrong yet” is placing the whole nation’s health in a lottery. Although always a possibility, it did take nearly a year before flight crews started spreading COVID. The advent in the UK of the second major COVID mutant from South Africa should stir the sometimes zombie bureaucracy into prophylactic action immediately. With UK borders closed to South Africa within hours of this discovery, I’m wondering why Australia still has open borders to both South Africa and the UK. “Better late than never” is not an acceptable COVID policy for 2021.
