While no judge’s gavel will echo sharply across a hushed NSW courtroom to bring justice finally upon the eastern suburb’s serial rapist Keith Simms, much applause should be paraded on the police involved in Strike Force Doreen, who cleverly tracked down the deceased villain. Using the randomly collected DNA of a relative, Simms was genetically traced in a manner similar to the conviction in 2020 of the US’s Golden State Killer Joe DeAngelo, a policeman guilty of 13 murders and dozens of rapes while on duty. With a brazen disregard for his victims by avoiding condoms in the age of AIDS, Simm’s genetic fingerprint has earned him richly deserved derision and infamy. ‘The police can hold their heads high as a grateful public acknowledge their perseverance and resolve.
