Andrew Bolt brilliantly sums up the conundrum that is Lidia Thorpe; senator yet rebel, opposed to the police as upholders of the law yet wanting them to empower her reforms. (Lidia, our one-woman constant rage machine – Opinion, 27/2). We are all equal under the law, so it is unacceptable that she is treated differently. Religious opponents of the Mardi Gras, throwing themselves onto the ground en-masse to disrupt Saturday’s parade would surely spend the night in jail and suffer some vilification. Thorpe shows how dangerous it could be to allow racial segregation in our constitution, especially if the Voice is the thin edge of the wedge. Those tolerating her breaches of good public behaviour should bear full responsibility for her escalating outlandishness. Single-handedly, I expect her campaign against the Voice for not going far enough will be providential in its defeat. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 28Feb2023.
