Having spent four months in the Westmead Hospital neonatal intensive care unit in Sydney during anaesthetic training, it would not be difficult to conclude that this was the best experience in my life either within or outside medicine. Spending time learning from some of the most brilliant intellects in the country in an environment where premature babies would fit in the palm of your hand, the wonders of embryological creation were surely awe inspiring. Seeing premature babies survive and thrive restored our collective faith in our human spirit and reminds us of what a precious gift our children are. In such a context, the evil that is Lucy Letby, a hideous, macabre, zealot, daring to violate the sacredness of the most innocent with her injections of lethal air or insulin into capillary-sized veins, could only be conceived in the depths of a twisted hellish psyche.
