James Morrow is far too harsh with his criticism of Sydney’s skyline. (“Brutal truth on city’s eyesores”,  DT, 14/11). Posing the question on how such a beautiful harbour could possibly be adorned with such ugliness, I am reminded of the old axiom: God made the harbour and the devil made the city. While occasionally “off colour” edifices blotch the eye-scape, the truth surely should be that some buildings are built for purpose, which should not be apologised for. Police stations should be ugly, fearsome in their countenance to strike awe in those hauled there to give account of their ill behaviour. The examples given in a thoughtful display across the pages of the Telegraph may not have been photographed from their optimal angle, which your correspondent might argue could only be located in deep space. As Shakespeare argues that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess we would all have our own list of uglier bricks and mortar belched out from uncaring architects hijacking our suburbs with minimal beneficence. Sadly, the ugly ones sometimes are heritage listed, so feigned outrage from journalists will never be heeded. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 15Nov2024
