Senator Maria Kovacic is right to address the challenges of homelessness, rental competition, the housing stock in metropolitan Sydney, Foreign Investment Review Board protocols and the moral bankruptcy of government and business in addressing these disgraceful impacts on the home-ownership dreams of a generation. (“Arrivals and foreign cash putting the bite on housing”, Opinion, DT, 21/6). That such an article was published on the Winter Solstice is perhaps a valuable metaphor, being the coldest day of the year and offering the shortest amount of light on the horizon. Sun Tzu, writing in the Art of War, noted that “all war is based on delusion”, and so perhaps we are distracted from identifying the major contributors to this problem, which escape reference in Senator Kovacic’s otherwise brilliant analysis. Foreigners investing in property is a means of securing an Australian visa/passport. Business blatantly supports strong immigration to promote customers and profits as well as a workforce source. State governments make a proportional fortune on house-sales stamp duty. So while our morning traffic roadblocks also tell us the city is too crowded, vested interests are most likely not hoping for a solution any time soon. Senator Kovacic’s solution would require bringing all parties to the table. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 24June2024
