Although completely wrong in her reasoning, motivation, timing and insensitivity on the complex matter of Palestinian recognition, Senator Fatima Payman highlights one of the biggest problems with politics in this country. Why do we regale journalists like Julian Assange for standing up to the evils of institutions committing atrocities in war, even though it seems those screaming “treason” would rather all bad actions on their side be condoned, yet politicians are never allowed to be so courageous? Commitment to community should trump party loyalty if not cabinet solidarity. Electorates with independents keep re-electing them because they are locally focused and don’t have split loyalty. It is tragic that Jewish members are silenced by party dictates, resulting in their likely defeat at the next election. Nailing her colours to the mast, Senator Payman pulls no punches.  With religion an integral factor in Middle East politics, all votes and discussion should be on the basis of a conscience vote.
