I’m not sure what we did wrong in Sydney, but news that Boris Johnson is back to haunt us with a book tour and a $1000 per head long lunch has ruined my appetite. (“Boris set for Aussie tour”. ST 9/11). Probably the most asphyxiating element in the downfall of Bojo was his insistence on “winging it” when making speeches. Relying largely on passion and the relevance of impulsive prognostications often left him babbling nonsense which infuriated those of us who really wanted him to be successful. Sadly, Vice President Kamala Harris resorted to similarly unsuccessful tactics while contesting the presidential election in the USA. Regurgitating emotive non-factual themes without clear practical solutions based on sound evidence, it seems Ms Harris avoided political decisions which might be divisive. Hopefully, lessons are learnt in the UK and USA that “kumbaya politics” will always deservedly end badly. People should hold out for the discounted tickets to Bojo’s talkfest if they want to give him a second chance. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 11Nov2024
