Booed at St Paul’s Cathedral in London with Harry and Meghan, tentative PM Boris Johnson might have felt at odds that the unifying impact of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations across the UK offered him no respite. (Boris on chopping block in party vote, 7/6). With the Queen setting a 70-year gold standard on how to behave in public service, the contrast with the muddling PM could not have been more stark. While Queen Victoria might be spinning in her grave at the thought of some of Boris’s other excesses, the British public had previously been very forgiving. Strong replacement leaders should be encouraged to step up, inspired by King George VI during the London Blitz. Then, the royal family shared the bombing and hardships of ordinary people.
