All Australians have woken up the day after a federal election at some time in the past and felt deep disappointment that their side had lost. The losing leader must always concede with grace, never alienating voters of the future with his or her thoughts of how silly everyone has been voting against their policies. Throughout campaigns, votes were never won by bad mouthing candidates, swearing at them or screaming “racists”. But attacking voters was definitely a first in this Voice to Parliament campaign. In our threatening world today, people clearly have higher priorities than the Voice, especially in the Middle East. Feeling aggrieved and seeking some perspective, the Indigenous Yes authors of a letter attacking No voters should listen to the speech in the NSW parliament by MP Tina Ayyad about Gaza last Thursday. Listening, they would learn about discussing difficult subjects with grace, being sensitive to divergent perspectives and extolling our redemptive humanity and oneness. In fact, all Australians should have a listen. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 24Oct2023.
