Regaled as the modern day opium of the masses, sports watching provides a vivid distraction from the worries of the world, its arenas dissolving our rich and poor into a cauldron of excited, baying voices (PM cops an Eely glare, 29/3). Our entertainment is a refuge from the professional, structured straitjackets into which modern life binds us. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has every right to similarly appreciate refuge in his misguided support of the thinly veiled flotsam from coastal Cronulla, vying placidly for NRL ladder points. Regrettably, the “Eely glare” from Parramatta staffer Tahleya Eggers meant a missed chance to convert his loyalties. Off duty, the PM need only focus on the contest of speed and might over the occasionally bloody green field. Eels supporters ought to acclaim Ms Eggers’s success on the field with her players and hope she abandons social media. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 30Mar2021.
