Peta Credlin unfairly derides politicians as being useless. (Too many politicians all talk and no action, 22/9). Most Australian voters would agree with this sentiment. But the duplication of responsibilities for state and federal government, introduced by the Whitlam government, has led to a bureaucratic stand-off, blocking the execution of projects. The Keating government then introduced the Council of Australian Governments, resulting in multiple agreements and treaties, backed up by legislation that impacts on future decision-makers. The solution for fast-tracking projects must begin with a clear delineation of political responsibility without overlap. The system is broken, not the wonderful people, who step up to the challenge to represent their communities in what could be the best country in the world. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 29Sep2019.
