A touch of scientific reality should muffle the delight that anti-vaxxers might feel after evidence of patients receiving an overdose of the COVID vaccination. Short of quaffing champagne and saying “I told you”, long-faced anti-vaxxers should know that the vaccine achieves efficacy by delivering mRNA to cells near the injection site, resulting in spike protein extrusion onto the cell surface. This dose response curve is flattened once existing ribosome sites are saturated. All drugs mediated by bodily enzymatic processes are similarly limited. The effect of the vaccine overdose is limited by the ribosome number, minimising any untoward effects. The ratio of lethal dose to effective dose is tested during trials, indexing the safety profile.
