Full marks to the Telegraph for its brilliant front page segue on Wednesday and Thursday, redefining ‘origin’, changing sports and modestly exhibiting a Benedict Arnold perception of loyalty. (They’re simply the west, 21/6). (Our origin heroes, 22/6). Having set my own alarm for 4am to watch the cricket ending and Australia’s victory on tenterhooks, I guess alarm bells of a different kind were ringing among the NSW Blues after the maroons’ whitewash. With the NRL deserving little more than a postage stamp of space on Thursday’s front page, it cannot be argued that the Blues were bad losers. Refereeing decisions and the Helen Keller observations from the bunker provides a valid grievance. Once momentum is established in such a game, it’s hard to counter. I strongly disagree with calls for the resignation of coaches in NRL, following poor player performance. Occasional brilliance and brute force demonstrated by Queensland should not be someone’s fault on the NSW side. Observers say more about themselves when their lynch-mob mentality decries coaches after a bad game. But yes, the ORIGINal NSW cricketers in the Ashes team were well coached.
