With debate about our nuclear industry, it seems Energy Minister Chris Bowen is getting very hot under the collar without any help from those pesky atmospheric gases (Anti-nuke Bowen is blowin’ in the wind – Andrew Bolt, 11/3). Expanding our nuclear focus to deliver a secure electricity supply with carbon dioxide neutrality is to be acclaimed. Our nuclear engineers and specialists already have a lifetime of experience to manage the transition. Banal generalisations, cherry picked from an ideological panoply of left wing wish lists must be called out. Critical to understand in the lexicon of Mr Bowen, the term recyclables refers to the eternal need to keep replacing the very expensive batteries, panels and wind turbines every 20 years, while dealing with the environmental contamination. Once constructed, nuclear reactors are very predictable in their operation, efficiency and duration. Mr Dutton will surely win the next election on this issue alone.
