As Tasmania’s favorite Royal is about to get her golden crown, resplendent in a king’s ransom of jeweled excellence, it is timely that our king of cricket has lost his. (Cap burglar, 3/1). Many Australians probably had no idea that the same baggy cap stays with a player for his whole career. During fundraising for the 2019 bush fires, Shane Warne raised a million dollars when his unique cap was auctioned. The value of the cap is achieved by its lifelong association with a single champion, so the individual who currently holds David Warner’s baggy green cap can never capitalise on it without disclosing its history and his culpable guilt. Pranks happen, but one hopes the villain returns the emotionally valuable cap with a sensible apology. When Australia wins the Sydney Test, we will all be in a forgiving mood surely.
