With less than 3 per cent of sexual assaults successfully prosecuted, NSW Police have launched Operation Vest to allow victims to register detailed time and date stamped statements for future reference (Consent lessons plan for schools, 27/3). Redefining “consent” not in nominal terms as a once only contractual event, but rather as being an adjectival description of “consent-full” actions, better depicts the dynamic nature of what’s being described. Unnecessary roughness, an onset of obnoxiousness or degrading behaviour are valid triggers to withdraw consent and oneself from such trysts. Earlier flirtatious commentary or actions are not automatic signatures to consent simply because of the implied expectations raised in the man’s mind. Advocacy of such themes in schools is to be commended, hopefully with advice promoting personal self-esteem and respect. Without self-regard, it is impossible to respect and honour others. Full marks to NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell for her initiatives. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 29Mar2021.
