The idea that a state might tax  citizens for economic activity beyond its borders is not new, with all Australians expected to declare foreign-earned income in tax returns. A legal challenge to the Queensland government’s property tax grab may have implications for federal tax raising if successful. (Queensland is up to its sneaky old tricks again – Editorial, 26/9). The bigger question after confirming the NSW premier’s swashbuckling bravado in thwarting the measures is whether Dominic Perrottet is still in the job next June when the legislation is enacted. A possible new Labor premier in NSW needs to describe where his loyalties lie.
