The Telegraph is right in its support of the NRL to extol the benefit of physical exercise to the youth of our state, laying the seeds for longevity, endurance and ideal intellectual and emotional maturity. (Don’t pass the buck, 29/3). A government investment in promoting junior NRL competitions across the state would achieve this objective rather than the prohibitive cost of stadiums, which are largely for elite use. The Labor government has no obligation to honour failed Liberal pork-barrelling in Penrith. But, as a cheaper compromise, Parramatta’s Comm Bank Stadium could become Penrith’s home ground until their $300m new stadium is constructed on its current site, saving up to $600m by not moving it. The Roosters should be forced to share their home ground, Allianz Stadium, with Souths. Arenas are built by the state and so the government should dictate who utilises them, while maximising usage and reinvesting proceeds into other grounds like at Manly and Cronulla. If the clubs want exclusive control, let them buy stadiums or build their own. We live in difficult times. NRL bosses must recognise that the new Premier is right to prioritise health and education.
