News that the NRL organisation is Injecting $306 million into its 17 clubs might have bought a temporary peace, but your excellent editorial sensibly cautions that they should save up for the bad times in the perennial footy cycle. (NRL bonanza gives cash and responsibility, 10/11). The increased funding shouldn’t be all wasted on higher player salaries. With clubs functioning on a business model of employing players, coaches and admin staff, holding the club license, and generating revenue directly or indirectly by sponsorship, merchandise, gate receipts and TV broadcasts, their investment in being self-sustaining must be seriously committed to. With the average team costing S30million annually to run, the clubs should now share some of the largesse with fans, offering free tickets occasionally throughout the season in those publicly funded arenas we all own.
