Congratulations to Deputy Technology and Digital Economy Minister Andrew Charlton and Attorney-General Michelle Rowland for their excellent decision to protect Australia’s copyright laws and prevent tech giants from stealing from local inventors and writers, while then using these same laws of copyright infringement to protect their ill found fortunes in the marketplace (“No free feed for big tech AI bots”,DT, 27/10).

This is hypocrisy on steroids. News Corp Australia executive chairman Michael Miller is right to protect the rights of news media and the inherent value of stories that their journalists write and are paid for. Many patent holders of inventions are challenged by the need to review prior art, establish novelty, confirm that their creation is not obvious and that it is likely to be commercially useful. The costs of establishing patents in multiple jurisdictions is astronomical. Watering down the Copyright Act to benefit AI developers may have many unpredictable aspects. Congratulations to these ministers for not opening this dangerous Pandora’s box to the detriment of the innovative thinkers. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 28 Oct 2025
