I often feel sorry for inadequate personalities who carelessly lust after political leadership, only to be confronted by a myriad of confounding variables which complicate decision making on matters of state and leave the critical public chorus of armchair experts in a raving high-pitched frenzy of derision. (“So much for PM’s price-rise promise”, DT, 14/7). For a beleaguered Anthony Albanese overcome by events, telling fibs is perhaps a sad coping mechanism to erase the pangs of guilt in sleepless night hours. Learning from the global lessons of history might offer some redemption. Noting Whitlam’s failings cannot be difficult. Embracing the humility and enterprise of Ben Chifley might surely evoke the sense that we don’t expect Albo to be right all the time, but forgiveness is awkward if clouded by deception. Like Bob Hawke, the PM must surround himself with the most skilled innovators to ensure a well networked cabinet focused on efficiency. The excellence of past prime ministers offers a treasure chest of experience which must be inspirational for a leader unnecessarily flailing in the suffocating vortex of Canberra’s unkind political climate.
