Australia is at a crossroads, and the Albanese government’s legislation seeking to limit free speech must be universally condemned (“Big sister will watch everything you say now”, Vikki Campion, 17/10). News that a snarl from eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant at Anika Well’s National Press Club presentation resulted in a question not being answered is a dire warning of things to come relating to free speech and accountability. It seems that no one must hurt the commissioner’s feelings. It seems the ‘tone’ of a message will be damning even if the wording is harmless. There are thousands of UK citizens arrested annually for social media commentary. Some of that commentary is negative to illegal immigration and mismanagement of rape cases. When UK government policy blatantly fails, those in power are using social media legislation to shield themselves from public anger. Every single Labor MP in Australia must be approached today and told we will not tolerate this hideous attack on freedoms in Australia. Thousands of Australians must never go to jail for criticising Anthony Albanese and his government’s policy stench. With only a 9 per cent reduction in bullying online since passing their last legislative salvo, Labor is obviously incapable of compiling focused, effective laws to solve real problems. Better still, before any more damage is done, let’s call an election, and put a broom through a few commissioners in the process. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 19October2026
