News that military investigators are continuing their witch hunt against SAS soldiers for alleged breaches of the Law of Armed Conflict is of major concern for any person attending an Anzac Day parade. (Elite force under the gun, 26/2). A fight for survival in a foreign country cannot be fought through the lens of second-guessing inquiries five years later. We depersonalise our young champions, turning them into obedient killing machines. The emotional abyss that is created in their souls leaves them vulnerable afterwards, as suicide statistics attest. Were the Taliban ever observing the Law of Armed Conflict with its terrorising bombs, anonymity and medieval barbarity? Unfamiliar with war first-hand, we accept it is never fair.
