The “Voice” for Indigenous people in the federal parliament is hard to argue against when geographic location already gives poorly populated precincts like Tasmania, ACT and Northern Territory unfair advantage in the Senate. (Unified Voice unlikely as Liberals agree to disagree, ST, 16/10). If democracy can be skewed by geography, why not race? The New Zealand model must be adopted in Australia, offering a single house with members from each electorate, plus some “senator” seats reserved for each state’s representation and some seats designated for elected Indigenous members. They should all be in a single chamber. The abolition of the Senate would cut costs, bureaucracy, delay and the repetitive breaking of party promises after elections because of legislative compromise with obstructive, small, single-issue parties. The constitutional debate about the Voice is a perfect catalyst for this discussion. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 23Oct2022.
