The Daily Telegraph is right to catalogue the economic challenges facing Australian institutions today. While school revenues have increased above inflation over the past 30 years, we have had exceptionally low inflation up to 2020 and expenses like increased pupil numbers are not linked to the Consumer Price Index. The financial veracity of private schools must surely relate to their balance sheet, not the singular item of revenue. The GPS schools are surely not being accused of excessive profitability while receiving government support. Public teachers have demanded as a “moral imperative” that there be “reform”, but the first imperative must be to be truthful in looking at profitability, not being misled by revenues. The class warfare suggested in the tone of the debate is unnecessarily divisive and the “arms race to elite facilities” must surely be promoted by old boys networks donating their fortunes to their beloved alma maters with strict guidelines on how funds are to be spent. Deciding the value of any company is surely based on profitability, not revenues. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 13Aug2024
