I’m sure most Sydneysiders would acclaim the courage of the female medical professional who was confronted by a prison escapee in her home on Monday (Carjack terror after Long Bay jailbreak, DT, 15/8). With a broken ankle, the prospects of this runaway being truly “on the run” was more police jargon than practicality. Keeping her emotions under control and being used to a diverse patient group, the hijacked woman bided her time, escaping with the keys and leaving a hobbling man frustrated in his quest and quickly back into custody. After the challenges faced by the hospital system in recent years, the dedication to service, abundance of common sense and determination for ideal outcomes, the heroine in this story is surely typical of so many in our health community. Each would surely prove a worthy match to the witless malcontents who long ago ignored their responsibilities to decent society, something opposite to the selfless ideals of our much loved doctors and nurses.
