Death certificates are not essays, but a very succinct explanation of the diseases contributing to death, in order of severity. (Dead cert, hot air kills, 22/5). There are multiple contributing physiological and pathological criteria that are present at death, predictably following the pattern of the disease. Any of these factors might have singularly or collectively contributed to asystole (flatlined ECG), but writing each one down would only confuse a coroner.
