Anyone with a heart would struggle to remain dry-eyed while recounting the lamentable suicide of Joey O’Keeffe (ST 13/2). If school bullying was a trigger in Joey’s case, surely the solution is not to be found in school grounds. Helplines, church councillors and local governments are surely in a better position to establish a trust and reap positive outcomes, rather than expect school councillors to undo the damage caused by that very same organisation. A safe place away from schools where a breach of trust has not already been violated must be considered a better choice. The teachers are already too busy. The community sadness after these unnecessary deaths across NSW towns should be confronted by those with the resources to make a difference. The Education Department has failed and might be seen as causal rather than curative. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 20Feb2022.
