The Daily Telegraph has produced a brilliant analysis of the historical, piecemeal construction of the great city of Sydney, cleverly highlighting many of the dynamics which have led to failed or abandoned projects (“How to build more Bradfield success”. DT, 6/1I). Sometimes, governments running out of money has been a blessing. Development should fearlessly be collaborative and consultative. Great ideas and visions do appeal to the majority. Occasionally however, the system fails. We have all witnessed the destruction of Willow Grove in Parramatta, one of the most beautiful, heritage listed properties in the state, pulverised into oblivion to fulfil Someone’s dream of a brand new museum (so that we westies could revere the past). Such irony! Nothing is built without sacrifice surely but those not anticipating that the sacrifice will be wholly theirs will usually protest loudest. Those constructing the Powerhouse Museum on the Parramatta River have certainly planned for the future as they sought to showcase the past with a massive new building. The voluminous size of the construction and colour extols to the world the reality that we are building another white elephant. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 7Oct2024
