Sprouting the headline that NSW residents at least love fruit in their diets, The Daily Telegraph has reported the findings of Bureau of Statistics data collated by health insurer iSelect, which is perhaps misleading (“When it comes to crunch, NSW loves fruit”.  DT, 18/11). Fruits offer a supply of fibre, calories and natural vitamins. Yet, how vital are daily vitamins? A recent study has shown that those who regularly take supplemental vitamin tablets over a long period have similar morbidity and mortality to those who don’t. A daily Berocca might make us feel good, but it doesn’t guarantee longevity. Similarly, there are benefits to fasting, weight control, exercise and avoidance of toxins like alcohol and nicotine (and dare I add caffeine), which are more significant to long term morbidity than force-feeding ourselves on fruits. With obesity a serious epidemic in the age of computers and iPhones, I expect advice on eating more fruits and vegetables to tick the box on “official” guidelines is surely misplaced.
