The progress of medicine throughout recent centuries has been achieved by invention of equipment, introduction and testing of innovative technologies and continuous system-wide monitoring to ensure quality outcomes. Peer review of outcomes in worldwide published data ensured that important questions were not left unanswered and the goal of beneficence and professional excellence remained in focus. With Dr Charlie Teo producing the best results, surely the lunatics are running the asylum, to use a medical axiom. The treatment of Charlie Teo and his exodus to foreign hospitals to give hope and surgical salvation to Australian patients is criminal. (Charlie’s angel opens her eyes, 29/10). When patients launch a class action against the Medical Council and the Health Care Complaints Commission to recover their costs, the majority of taxpayers, who are on Dr Teo’s side, must surely refuse to pick up the bill. I’m so happy for Angie MacPherson and her family. The neurosurgeons refusing to operate were sadly influenced negatively by those persecuting Dr Teo. But the tide must surely be shifting. The self-regulating medical profession must be wary of the seeds it is sowing. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 5Nov2023.
