Whether it be Covid lockdowns, light rail construction or Clover’s bike lanes, keeping a business in the city of Sydney has been a harrowing tale of late. Whichever businesses that are left along Oxford St might rejoice if the abandonment of a new bike lane at the behest of the Mardi Gras team is successful. (Mardi Gras tripping out, 1/3). To have the LGBT team onside, businesses along Liverpool and Kent streets should have lobbied for a course diversion of the annual parade as they resisted their unused bike lane construction. Bemoaning the little lane causing cost escalations on parade night, poor clearance for four-wheel-drive emergency vehicles, absent concrete barriers causing accidents with police and first aid resources exhausted, the drama queens were in full flight. Hopefully that translates into a better Mardi Gras night. Rather than phantom bike lanes, the organisers might look to the weather problems and perhaps borrow a few tinnies from Lismore if the worst eventuates. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 2Mar2022.
