While Jesus’s first miracle turned water into wine, I doubt Archbishop Anthony Fisher really wants churches and pubs treated the same. (Churches praying to be treated like pubs, 28/5). The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Christian churches around the world to be closed. Other faiths have followed suit. Regrettably, near empty church services in the past 30 years have given the faiths ample social-distancing practice. Those prayerful Christians, who value Bible reading would find spiritual solace outside the locked church doors. The Archbishop cannot argue that large church spaces ensure virus containment when the entire sacrifice of the mass is Holy Communion, exposing one priest to close contact with multiple potential virus donors and recipients. A church service without Holy Communion would be an ideological mockery. Sadly, the NSW government has got this decision right. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 29May2020.
