Everyone filling in a ballot form while voting is asked to make a choice of their preferred candidate to represent their views. This system of voting requires no explanation to the Australian people. With the divisive nature of the Voice debate and Noel Pearson’s announcement that a “no” majority will hamper reconciliation, surely the answer is clear. Voters should be asked to list their preferential outcomes, with the choices being (a) no constitutional change; (b) acknowledgment in the Constitution of our first culture; (c) an institutional Voice to advocate on Indigenous affairs. A majority should be given the opportunity to find a middle ground and take divisiveness out of our quest for unity and a positive future together as proud Australians.
