Prime Minister Scott Morrison correctly points out that the victims of settlement in the NSW colony were the Irish. (History cops a big bash, 22/1). The King had issued a letter to the Governor, warning of severe punishment for any mistreatment of natives. No such protection existed for the Irish. One hundred and forty years after Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland, the descendants of his victims of invasion were shuffled off to the colony of NSW. As convicts or indentured servants, the Irish worked as forced labour for British construction projects in the new town. The repression, racial vilification, mass starvation and human denigration imposed on the Irish after Cromwell’s invasion is documented history. To suggest that these same Irish were willing participants in a wider invasion of continental Australia is grandiose nonsense. Scott Morrison is right to up-end the counterculture activists rewriting our precious history. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 23Jan2021.
