Russell Crowe’s vision of teaching young men how to respect themselves, women and society is to be applauded (Rusty’s footy crusade, 6/3). While basic parenting skills should best be taught at home, his valiant attempt to address lapses in discipline among the youths, some of whom may be destined for Rabbitohs glory, sets the bar for other rugby league clubs to emulate. With a seven-figure price tag, however, one might wonder whether a society-wide advertising campaign against drunkenness might reap greater benefits. Few reported episodes of NRL player’s misbehaving have occurred sober. While other recent headlines might have disheartened South Sydney part-owner James Packer, he has surely earned widespread approbation for his timely support of Russell Crowe’s dream.
