Great people with supernatural talents taking rollercoaster rides on the wheels of fortune are never to be trusted to objectively write their own stories. (lan Thorpe’s shock Olympic admission, 19/12). Ian Thorpe’s disappointment and self-doubt after retirement was unnecessary. All Australians who watched the 2000 Olympics carry in their hearts the pride and joy of his swimming wins. He did the job expected and we could ask no more. He left a winner, at the top of his game, warmly loved and never disappointing. He should have no regrets now of leaving too soon. His message to athletes in his new role might be to set their own goals and disregard negativity. Guessing what the unstated expectations of the public are can only lead to exaggerated pressure. Success is temporary, fleeting and variably remembered. Have no regrets.
