While occasionally criticised throughout the year for the odd NAPLAN mishap or teaching policy bungle that sounds like the end of the world, our terrific NSW education system always resoundingly redeems itself with the publication of HSC results (Indy kids star in HSC mastery, 15/12). Proving to be the best Christmas present for a department beset by challenges, our wonderfully dedicated teachers are justly rewarded for their intellectual guidance of our marvellously talented students. Learning English as a third language at school, Zayn Boulad is truly inspirational to come first in NSW in English Standard. Perhaps coming from behind supercharges our motivation. In my country high school in the 1970s, a classmate took up Geography just 12 months before the HSC and made the top 20 in the state. Congratulations to all participants who have made their parents proud and lived up to the expectations of their trusting teachers. Our society is richer for the principles of hard work and dedication extolled by the classes of 2022. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 16Dec2022.
