Your correspondent Tyson Jackson offers a too humble view of the place of Sydney in the world of sport. (Sydney’s fighting for top spot in sport, 25/8). Having hosted the “best ever” Olympic Games in 2000, as well as a multitude of sporting events attracting the world’s best, the hesitancy to avoid bold judgments lest our ill-weathered and bad tempered southern neighbour take offense is surely ludicrous. With ideal weather for outdoor activities, our Sydney youth have enormous advantage over their contemporaries living in frost bound Canada, the overpopulated metropolises of modern Europe or the unpredictable, indebted escarpments of Port Phillip Bay. After another recent success with the Matildas kicking records if not goals on the world stage, take a well earned bow Sydney. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 28Aug2023.
