Olympic show-jumping champ Shane Rose surely bowls us over with his courage after surviving a horrendous accident, which threatened his chances of going to Paris for the Olympic Games. (“I am getting bums on seats”, DT, 5/7). With his 600kg horse crushing his bones, sending him to ICU on the eve of his own dire “Ides of March” this year, the Olympics should surely have been naught but a futile comatose dream. As he paid tribute to the Australian Institute of Sport for his accelerated rehabilitation, his resilience, commitment and mind power is truly awesome to behold. Boasting that all his “mankini” publicity would get “more bums on seats” at his events, I guess his only concern should be keeping his own in the saddle. Good luck to a champion who embodies the best in Olympic tenacity and a resolve to never give up. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 8July2024
