Cricket Australia’s CEO Kevin Roberts has advised that men who have transitioned to women can play in women’s cricket teams (New policy smashes boundaries 9/8). He claims that people should not be discriminated against, harassed or excluded on the basis of who they are. But the members of a team are selected on the basis of skill. Those with less ability are excluded on the basis of who they are. Team selection is intrinsically discriminatory favoring better players. So, since boys outperform girls in sport at all ages, women could be excluded from representative teams by transgender athletes. Women will be disadvantaged when competing with stronger male opponents. Women also favor change room privacy. This announcement by Mr Roberts may see many women retreat from a sport that leaves them disadvantaged on the pitch and exposed in the change room. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 10Aug2019.
