All Australians should be signing up to support the Let Them Be Kids campaign as it gains momentum through the efforts of The Daily Telegraph. So many of us had terrific childhoods – growing up with home-cooked meals, riding shetland ponies (which were too high to get on without a big brother’s help) – just loving life and being an energetic kid on a farm. We only watched TV at night with its plethora of cartoons and kid-friendly serials. Our collective hearts are surely breaking when seeing the pervading evil emanating from social media. It has displaced normal life for kids with its odious propensity for evaluating self-worth on the delusional opinions of strangers and being “liked”. The competitive search for “likes” has unduly opened a Pandora’s box for pride, envy, wrath (“Teenage rage:Knife threats to parents who disconnect internet”, DT, 21/5), avarice, gluttony (or, worse, bulimia) and lust. No effort must be spared in promoting this gallant crusade of The Daily Telegraph to save this precious generation from itself and the illusion of the “like” button.
