Many historical mistakes are made when the events reminisced upon are taken out of context and opined on with the falsely virtuous imperatives of looking back with an apparent 20-20 vision (“Dom in big vax backflip on exit”, DT, 7/8). Being clever after the fact is the realm of clowns, surely. At its peak, Covid was killing thousands of people daily. We were gripped by real fear, knowing the potential horrors of ICUs being overwhelmed, escalating mortality rates for those with non-Covid conditions needing those beds. The highly ethical resolve of medical decision-making was undertaken by those with little previous pandemic experience. We were exposed to international headlines riddled with a dirge of morbid statistics and scant hope. Mr Perrottet’s departing comments reflect poorly on his predecessor but there are those of us who believe that, in a truly honest context, Gladys Berejiklian was our most courageous premier ever. Opining on what “could have been” on exiting parliament threatens to diminish his excellence as a treasurer and infrastructure builder who’s personal legacy is singularly unrivalled.
