Writing last week in The Daily Telegraph, NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman was opulent with his generalisations, crafting inane quips, ranting about poor excuses from Labor and succumbing to a good dose of gold-plated self-indulgent hypocrisy, worthy of a politician destined for permanent opposition (“Labor losing cash but winning blame game”, DT 25/6). I was hoping this week would be better for him and the Coalition in NSW but this was not to be. (“A moment of manners reveals Lib-Nat tension”, DT 1/7). What is lacking in state politics is a strong, determined leader on the Liberal side. Such a visionary would eliminate all the artificial ideological boundaries which are defensively supporting the various self-serving factions, since everyone would unite while wanting to be on the winner’s side. Tony Blair achieved this in 1997 in the UK with the once-multifaceted Labour Party. Rather than destroy the Coalition agreement with the Nats, a new leader would surely be the best option, especially if it is the visionary Dominic Perrottet. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 2July2024
